See SEO Results?
The author starts by describing our hopes and dreams (some would say dilusions) – in that we start a campaign, hoping to see growth ASAP – and in all honesty, thats pretty spot on.
He then goes on to describe what we expect, or what we have seen in the past, and that is that links are a major major contributor to the growth of the industry. Backlinks are the Backbone of internet traffic lubrication.
What this is getting to, is that we already know that SEO is time consuming, and backbreaking and tiring- how much effort is required before we can lay off the major legwork and see some results.
Next up, there are the variables that require concideration.
Of course the first one to touch on is that not all links are created equal. People forget that in the real world, a link counts as a vote of confidence, in theory anyway, I would only link to you, if the information you held was concidered valuable to the content that I am linking out from.
Does that make sense? I wrote about fish, and I am a fisherman, if I linked to your fish market, it would imply that you hold information that is valuable to me, as a well known fisherman – therefore you should know a thing or 2 about fishing. Click Here to Learn More.
The whole point, is to show the internet, that you know what you are talking about, but not only that, it is to show the world that I want to learn from you.
Source Strength – this means that the source of the link is already considered a entity to be reconed with – they are already trustworthy experts in the field.
If a site like an educational institution, or an encyclopedia, or a government site links to you, then they are already powerful and they are going to pass some of that power up the chain to you.
Domain Diversity – WHAAA? So this is a strange one, domain diversity means that each link from a given source provides a diminishing return – Umm, this means that 1 link from 1 domain is better than 2 links from the same domain. The diversity of the sources will increase your ranking potential.
The question was – ‘how many links are required‘ and the answer means, many, but not from the same place.
Target Landing Page. I use this sometimes to find black hat SEO’s – as a site that sends thousands of links to a home page looks fake, its not helpful, but linking from within an article to a specific page (or even a specific part of a page) brings value. It also means that juice is passed to the piece of content that is valuable, and that in turn helps that whole site, but not only that, it really helps the peice of content in question.
Semantically related Keywords. Anchor texts on inbound links and actually inner links are often overlooked, people think that they dont lend any value – but if theres one thing we know, its that they really do – they really significantly influece the link structure and profile of our site.
There is always a bit of a lul after making a change, some believe that it has to do with the way in which a site builds its profile, and others believe that its an anti spam mechanism put in place by the very creators of the searcg engines. Something that checks to see if it is being minipulated. Once you start doing things to rank your site, there is no doubt in my mind that the system is watching to see if you are going the way of the samurai, or the way of the dark lord.
When we look at a site, or a competitor, we look at 2 things, on site SEO and off site SEO.
On site factors include the potential power of inner links but more importantly, we also need to look at the overall depth and quality of the content provided. Other factors affecting campaign structure are the site architecture and the hosting provider. As an SEO, linking in doesnt do that much to help with growth, but that is because the seo space is crowded and other SEOs are putting a lot of effort into their space, ranking their cleints high will not help themselves – but as we have learned, thousands of links are required to remain number one. This is something that clients are not willing to accept, SEO is not set and forget – they need to climb the ladder of success and keep climbing.
We need to keep running in order to stand still – clients that are unwilling to do that will only remain on top for a little while.
Once they fall behind, they will need tofund someone to help push them back to the front.
So the question remains un answerred, if anything it should be more ambiguouse now – there is no set number of links, it should almost come down to ‘how much juice is required’ How much juice does the current number one have.
There is a cartoon about samurai samual jackson – Afro Samurai – where you can only take on number 1 when you have beaten number 2, and its the same with SEO – you can only climb to the top, one contender at a time – beat number 50, then add some juice, beat number 49, then add some juice and so it goes, on and on, but as you get closer to the top it will get harder and harder, as each of these contenders for the top spot have had to do the same thing – kill, move on, kill, move on, on and on.
The mathematical component associated with SEO is a strange place – the world itself is a hyrarchy of common sense, and decision making – where do we go for influence and expertise, who do we trust, and how will that come to play in the grander scheme of things?
